Then these men had cords put round them as they were, in their coats, their trousers, their hats, and their clothing, and were dropped into the burning and flaming fire.

And because the king's order was not to be put on one side, and the heat of the fire was so great, the men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego were burned to death by the flame of the fire.

And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, with the cords about them, went down into the burning and flaming fire.

Then King Nebuchadnezzar, full of fear and wonder, got up quickly, and said to his wise men, Did we not put three men in cords into the fire? and they made answer and said to the king, True, O King.

He made answer and said, Look! I see four men loose, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are not damaged; and the form of the fourth is like a son of the gods.

Then Nebuchadnezzar came near the door of the burning and flaming fire: he made answer and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, you servants of the Most High God, come out and come here. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego came out of the fire.

And the captains, the chiefs, and the rulers, and the king's wise men who had come together, saw these men, over whose bodies the fire had no power, and not a hair of their heads was burned, and their coats were not changed, and there was no smell of fire about them.

Nebuchadnezzar made answer and said, Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who has sent his angel and kept his servants safe who had faith in him, and who put the king's word on one side and gave up their bodies to the fire, so that they might not be servants or worshippers of any other god but their God.

And it is my decision that any people, nation, or language saying evil against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, will be cut to bits and their houses made waste: because there is no other god who is able to give salvation such as this.

Then the king gave Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego even greater authority in the land of Babylon.

Hebreus 6:4-6, aparentemente, parece ensinar que não há esperança de arrependimento ou de re-aceitação divina para aqueles que aceitaram a Cristo e depois o rejeitaram. As afirmações aqui consignadas pelo apóstolo trouxeram sérios problemas para a igreja cristã, especialmente durante as perseguições, quando alguns fraquejaram e posteriormente arrependidos de terem sido tíbios na fé quiseram voltar, muitas comunidades cristãs não queriam aceitá-los escudados em Hebreus 6:6.
Mas isso parece contraditório ao próprio cristianismo, pois os evangelhos ensinam que Cristo está sempre de braços abertos para receber o mais indigno pecador, que reconhece o erro e apela pelo perdão, como nos relata Mateus 18:22 e se comprova na triste experiência de Pedro. Em contrapartida, outra verdade escriturística deve ser lembrada: não há esperança para quem consciente e deliberadamente rejeita os ensinamentos de Cristo e o seu sacrifício vicário em nosso favor.
Portanto, esta passagem deve ser estudada em paralelo a 10:26-31 e 12:15-17; 25-29. Da leitura de Hebreus 6:4-6 juntamente com as outras passagens correlatas, deduzimos que Paulo fala de pessoas que propositadamente rejeitaram a Cristo e os princípios do evangelho.
Algumas pessoas ficam perturbadas com estes textos, pensando que é possível que eles se refiram ao apostatado comum, que em seu coração jamais rejeitou ao Senhor, e que está constantemente pensando que algum dia voltará a servi-lo novamente. E muitas vezes, quando ele começa a penar seriamente em fazer isto o mais depressa possível, o Diabo o confronta com estes textos, da mesma forma que confrontou o próprio Cristo com textos da Escritura, procurando dar-lhes uma aplicação errônea.
O texto fala de indivíduos que verdadeiramente iluminados. Verdadeiramente provaram o dom celestial, e sabem por experiência o que ele significa. Tornaram-se participantes do Espírito Santo. Provaram a Palavra de Deus e os poderes do mundo vindouro. Sua experiência alcançou as profundezas de um conhecimento definido, de forma que conheceram os explícitos fundamentos do divino dom. E então esses indivíduos se afastam de tudo isto, e, segundo o texto citado do décimo capítulo de Hebreus, consideram o sangue da aliança, pelo qual foram sacrificados, como coisa profana, comum. Desprezaram o Espírito da graça. Trata-se de uma deserção real que leva um homem a renunciar as coisas que ele realmente sabe serem a verdade, desrespeitando e desprezando Espírito Santo.
Logo, a maioria dos teólogos aceita que a apostasia aqui referida é o ato de cometer o pecado imperdoável (Mat. 12:31-32), uma vez que esta é a única forma de apostasia que é sem esperança. Para John Cotton: “nada pode existir nesta passagem que nos leve a duvidar da total misericórdia de Deus, pois do contrário, esta passagem destruiria o evangelho”.
