And the king sent, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.

And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them to Beth-el.

And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places around Jerusalem; them also that burned incense to Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.

And he brought out the grove from the house of the LORD, without Jerusalem, to the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder of it upon the graves of the children of the people.

And he broke down the houses of the sodomites that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove.

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burnt incense, from Geba to Beer-sheba, and broke down the high places of the gates that were in the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on a man's left hand at the gate of the city.

Nevertheless, the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, but they ate of the unleavened bread among their brethren.

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.

QUEM VOCÊ TEM SIDO?
Jeremias 49-50
Quem eram os amonitas, edomitas, elamitas e babilônicos? O que eram Damasco e Hazor?
Os amonitas eram descendentes de Amon, filho do incesto de Ló com sua filha. Que origem tortuosa! Quando eles cresceram em tamanho populacional, apossaram-se da região que fica nas proximidades das nascentes do rio Jaboque, tendo como capital, Rabá. Foi no tempo dos juízes que os amonitas passaram a hostilizar os israelitas. Desde aproximadamente 1100 a.C., as relações entre os filos de Amon e o povo de Deus nunca mais foram plenamente pacíficas. E no contexto de Jeremias 49, uma época posterior à da queda do império Assírio, apesar de vassalos do rei da Babilônia, os amonitas continuavam comportando-se como inimigos muito hostis ao povo de Israel.
Descendentes de Esaú, que foi aquele filho de Isaque que, desde jovem, já era inimigo de Jacó (Israel), os edomitas ocupavam a região sul do Mar Morto. O parentesco que havia entre eles e os israelitas fazia com estes lhes reconhecessem como uma nação irmã. Depois que os descendentes de Edom rebelaram-se contra o rei Jorão, filho de Josafá, sempre viveram em peleja com Judá. Isso fez com que, quando os judeus foram conquistados por Babilônia, a naçãozinha irmã comemorasse a desgraça dos seus parentes, descendentes de Israel. Isto tudo nos leva ao contexto da leitura de hoje
Damasco era a capital, a cidade-estado mais forte, dos arameus. E, apesar de serem semitas, estes sírios também haviam abandonado a Deus.
Hazor era a maior cidade que ficava a norte de Canaã. E teve uma época, que teve um rei, que de lá desta cidade, ele subjugou e oprimiu as doze tribos de Israel por vinte anos. Isso havia sido bem no passado, mas as conseqüências tinham ficado.
Os elamitas também eram semitas (descendentes de Sem) que também já estavam muito distantes do povo de Deus. Eles haviam sido um povo muito poderoso. Por conseqüência, o abuso de autoridade ao relacionar-se com os israelitas havia tornado-se um costume. Na época de Jeremias, não eram mais tão poderosos, mas faziam parte do império Babilônico. Para enxergar o que “Babilônia” representa para o povo de Deus, leia Jeremias 50.
É muito fácil dizer quem eram os amonitas, os edomitas, os arameus, os elamitas... Mas e você? Quem tem sido você? Este questionamento, sobre quem é quem, está em jogo direto para com o plano histórico e eterno que Deus tem para a humanidade. Dependendo da vida que está levando, você pode estar se encaixando nesse plano, ou atrapalhando-o.
Pense nisso e compare, ao fazer a leitura de hoje. Quem você tem sido? Isso é o mais importante.
