And all the people are gathered as one man unto the broad place that [is] before the water-gate, and they say to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, that Jehovah commanded Israel.

And Ezra the priest bringeth the law before the assembly, both of men and women, and every one intelligent to hear, on the first day of the seventh month,

and he readeth in it before the broad place that [is] before the water-gate, from the light till the middle of the day, over-against the men, and the women, and those intelligent, and the ears of all the people [are] unto the book of the law.

And Ezra the scribe standeth on a tower of wood that they made for the purpose, and Mattithiah standeth near him, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right; and on his left Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddana, Zechariah, Meshullam.

And Ezra openeth the book before the eyes of all the people -- for above all the people he hath been -- and at his opening [it] all the people have stood up,

and Ezra blesseth Jehovah, the great God, and all the people answer, `Amen, Amen,` with lifting up of their hands, and they bow and do obeisance to Jehovah -- faces to the earth.

And Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, giving the people understanding in the law, and the people, [are] on their station,

and they read in the book, in the law of God, explaining -- so as to give the meaning, and they give understanding to the convocation.

And Nehemiah -- he [is] the Tirshatha -- saith (and Ezra the priest, the scribe, and the Levites who are instructing the people) to all the people, `To-day is holy to Jehovah your God, do not mourn, nor weep:` for all the people are weeping at their hearing the words of the law.

And he saith to them, `Go, eat fat things, and drink sweet things, and sent portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for to-day [is] holy to our Lord, and be not grieved, for the joy of Jehovah is your strength.`

O SOFRIMENTO PODE SER UMA DISCIPLINA
JÓ 35-37
Você está lendo direitinho o livro de Jó? Tem sido perseverante em ler os discursos dos quatro amigos e, principalmente ontem e hoje, o discurso do “amigo” Eliú? Porque se não formos perseverantes para, pelo menos, ler a história, é uma vergonha, não é mesmo? Pense na perseverança que Jó teve, ao suportar o sofrimento dele. Ele foi o homem que mais sofreu no mundo, mas que também se tornou símbolo da paciência, pela perseverança que teve em suportar tudo.
Os amigos dele, apesar de ficarem falando muita besteira, também foram perseverantes, coitados! Eles não merecem só a nossa critica, mas merecem também a nossa atenção, porque, apesar dos pesares, eles estavam tentando acertar. Pelo menos, eles estavam ao redor do sorumbático sofredor. Isso já foi uma virtude: aguentar ficar ao lado de Jó.
E nós estamos lendo, especificamente, sobre a última fala de Eliú, que foi o último dos quatro a falar, antes de Deus chegar e se pronunciar naquela discussão. E como as leituras de ontem e de hoje são um discurso só, quero retomar um trecho, que está em Jó 33:14-19, para contextualizar o que quero dizer aqui sobre a leitura de hoje. Assim, faríamos um fechamento sobre essa discussão do sofrimento de Jó.
“Pois a verdade é que Deus fala, ora de um modo, ora de outro, mesmo que o homem não o perceba. Em sonho ou em visão durante a noite, quando o sono profundo cai sobre os homens e eles dormem em suas camas, ele pode falar aos ouvidos deles e aterrorizá-los com advertências, para prevenir o homem das suas más ações e livrá-lo do orgulho, para preservar da cova a sua alma, e a sua vida da espada. Ou o homem pode ser castigado no leito de dor, com os seus ossos em constante agonia.”
Comentando sobre isso, veja o que encontrei no periódico “Jó, sofrimento e restauração”, 3º trimestre de 1980, pág. 75: “Eliú era um jovem insatisfeito tanto com os discursos de Jó como os de seus três amigos. Talvez a maior contribuição de Eliú ao debate é a nova ênfase à ideia de que o sofrimento pode ser disciplina, em vez de punição... O conceito de Eliú sobre o sofrimento considerando-o como disciplina não é novo na história de Jó. É a ênfase que ele dá ao conceito que é nova... [Jó] ...deixou que Eliú realçasse a ideia de que o sofrimento pode ser uma disciplina, antes que uma punição”.
Essa é a grande lição. O sofrimento que nos assola não é de todo mal. O lado bom é que ele nos disciplina.
