The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after Nebuzaradan, the captain of the armed men, had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him; for he had been put in chains, among all the prisoners of Jerusalem and Judah who were taken away prisoners to Babylon.

And the captain of the armed men took Jeremiah and said to him, The Lord your God gave word of the evil which was to come on this place:

*** and the Lord has made it come, and has done as he said; because of your sin against the Lord in not giving ear to his voice; and that is why this thing has come on you.

Now see, this day I am freeing you from the chains which are on your hands. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, then come, and I will keep an eye on you; but if it does not seem good to you to come with me to Babylon, then do not come: see, all the land is before you; if it seems good and right to you to go on living in the land,

Then go back to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made ruler over the towns of Judah, and make your living-place with him among the people; or go wherever it seems right to you to go. So the captain of the armed men gave him food and some money and let him go.

So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, in Mizpah, and was living with him among the people who were still in the land.

Now when it came to the ears of all the captains of the forces who were in the field, and their men, that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, ruler in the land, and had put under his care the men and women and children, all the poorest of the land, those who had not been taken away to Babylon;

Then they came to Gedaliah in Mizpah, even Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan, the son of Kareah, and Seraiah, the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah, the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

And Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to them and their men, saying, Have no fear of the servants of the Chaldaeans: go on living in the land, and become the servants of the king of Babylon, and all will be well.

As for me, I will be living in Mizpah as your representative before the Chaldaeans who come to us: but you are to get in your wine and summer fruits and oil and put them in your vessels, and make living-places for yourselves in the towns which you have taken.

Jeremias 27-29
Em Jeremias 27, mais uma vez, o profeta anuncia sua mensagem utilizando um ato simbólico. Deus, que é o Senhor da História, concedeu por um tempo a soberania a Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia, e as nações que não se submeterem a ele terão de arcar com as conseqüências. Esse mesmo Deus é, ainda hoje, o Senhor da História. Ele concede a você certo domínio sobre algumas coisas na vida, e a outros, certos domínios sobre você. Pare para pensar, em como é que você tem lidado com estes assuntos de exercício de autoridade concedida.
No capítulo 28, a menção do jugo do rei da Babilônia relaciona este relato com o capítulo anterior, apesar de, aqui, a narração estar na terceira pessoa e não na primeira. O relato apresenta dois profetas, Hananias e Jeremias, como representantes de dois pontos de vista antagônicos. Hananias representa os profetas que anunciam paz e prosperidade; Jeremias declara que esse anúncio traz falsa esperança. Na realidade Jeremias estabeleceu um ponto de equilíbrio: o cativeiro não seria tão breve, como alguns falsos profetas tentavam predizer, mas certamente chegaria ao fim. O resultado desse encontro revelou quem é o falso profeta e qual é o critério para identificá-lo.
Mas quando entramos no capítulo 29, encontramos pelo menos três importantes fontes de esperança:
Deus diz ao Seu povo que não deve desistir da esperança porque sua situação não é resultado de acaso ou mal impossível de se predizer, pois o próprio Deus diz: “Eu deportei [Judá] de Jerusalém para a Babilônia” (verso 4). Embora o mal parecia cercá-lo, Judá nunca deixou de estar no centro das mãos de Deus.
Deus diz ao Seu povo que não deve perder a esperança porque Ele pode trabalhar mesmo dentro das dificuldades presentes (verso 7).
Deus diz ao Seu povo que não deve perder a esperança porque Ele vai pôr fim ao seu exílio em um tempo específico: “Assim diz o Senhor: Logo que se cumprirem para a Babilônia setenta anos, atentarei para vós outros e cumprirei para convosco a Minha boa palavra, tornando a trazer-vos para este lugar” (verso 10).
Mas veja com destaque os versos 11-14. Depois que Deus explicou como estava no comando no passado, está no comando no presente e estará no comando no futuro, Ele expressa graciosamente o terno cuidado por Seu povo. Leia os versos 11-14, colocando seu nome cada vez que aparecer a palavra vós, vosso, vocês ou similar, como se Deus estivesse fazendo-lhe essas promessas pessoalmente. Aplique-as para suas lutas, quaisquer que sejam elas.
