|Jeremias 40:1|
The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after Nebuzaradan, the captain of the armed men, had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him; for he had been put in chains, among all the prisoners of Jerusalem and Judah who were taken away prisoners to Babylon.

|Jeremias 40:2|
And the captain of the armed men took Jeremiah and said to him, The Lord your God gave word of the evil which was to come on this place:

|Jeremias 40:3|
*** and the Lord has made it come, and has done as he said; because of your sin against the Lord in not giving ear to his voice; and that is why this thing has come on you.

|Jeremias 40:4|
Now see, this day I am freeing you from the chains which are on your hands. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, then come, and I will keep an eye on you; but if it does not seem good to you to come with me to Babylon, then do not come: see, all the land is before you; if it seems good and right to you to go on living in the land,

|Jeremias 40:5|
Then go back to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made ruler over the towns of Judah, and make your living-place with him among the people; or go wherever it seems right to you to go. So the captain of the armed men gave him food and some money and let him go.

So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, in Mizpah, and was living with him among the people who were still in the land.

Now when it came to the ears of all the captains of the forces who were in the field, and their men, that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, ruler in the land, and had put under his care the men and women and children, all the poorest of the land, those who had not been taken away to Babylon;

|Jeremias 40:8|
Then they came to Gedaliah in Mizpah, even Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan, the son of Kareah, and Seraiah, the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah, the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

And Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to them and their men, saying, Have no fear of the servants of the Chaldaeans: go on living in the land, and become the servants of the king of Babylon, and all will be well.

As for me, I will be living in Mizpah as your representative before the Chaldaeans who come to us: but you are to get in your wine and summer fruits and oil and put them in your vessels, and make living-places for yourselves in the towns which you have taken.

Jeremias 42-44
O Jeremias foi parar no Egito. Ele não queria ir para lá, de jeito nenhum. Ele falara para o povo que eles não deveriam ir. E ele só foi para lá, por ter sido forçado pelas circunstâncias da teimosia do povo. Mas, fazer o quê!
Você já passou por isso? Por uma circunstância desagradável, pela qual você não gostaria de ter passado. A princÃpio você evita, mas depois, a situação foge do seu controle, e, por causa dos outros, você também acaba se lascando. Nestas horas, é difÃcil ficar de boca fechada.
Foi o que aconteceu com o Jeremias que foi parar em Dafne, na fronteira nordeste do Egito. Dafne não seria o ponto final da migração dos judeus que acompanhavam Joanã naquela fuga. Dali eles se espalhariam. Mas, o fato é que, durante a pausa em Dafne, Jeremias recebeu uma mensagem do Senhor. E deveria apresentá-la em forma dramatizada, como as do cinto de linho e do vaso quebrado, que já apresentara anteriormente.
A obstinação do povo era tanta que nada mais, nem a mensagem, as palavras ou as encenações de Jeremias, tinha efeito. Quão fácil era-lhes torcer os fatos e interpretá-los segundo seus preconceitos e preferência. Qual fácil é também que isso aconteça conosco hoje. É um perigo. Quando o povo de Deus chega a esse ponto, o que mais um profeta de Deus pode fazer?
Diante da inutilidade dos argumentos, Jeremias apela para o futuro: a história diria quem tinha razão. Que levassem sua maldade às últimas conseqüências. Veriam com seus próprios olhos, e em sua própria carne, a palavra de quem subsistiria, a sua, ou a do Senhor. Deus então declara que Seu nome não mais seria pronunciado em vão por um só judeu vivendo no Egito. Seriam todos consumidos pela espada e pela fome. Os que sobreviveriam e teriam ocasião de voltar à sua terra constituiriam um número diminuto.
Um sinal finalmente lhes é dado como prova de que a palavra do Senhor é que prevaleceria. Tinham se refugiado à sombra de Faraó-Hofra (Apries - 589 a 570 d.C). Pois bem, Hofra seria entregue na mão de seus inimigos, que o fariam perecer. E realmente, ele perdeu sua vida numa rebelião, sendo sucedido por Amasis.
Os teimosos judeus ficaram perdidos. O maior problema daquele povo foi confundir permissão divina com vontade divina. Uma coisa é o que Deus quer, outra coisa é o que Deus, até certo ponto, tolera. E cair na zona da tolerância é um perigo. Porque tudo fica passÃvel de ser confundido, e, na penumbra cinzenta, vem o pior: o sincretismo.
O melhor é procurar fazer a vontade de Deus.
