And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.

And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Bethel.

And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.

And he brought out the grove from the house of the LORD, without Jerusalem, unto the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people.

And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove.

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba, and brake down the high places of the gates that were in the entering in of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on a man's left hand at the gate of the city.

Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, but they did eat of the unleavened bread among their brethren.

COMO ENTENDER ECLESIASTES?
Eclesiastes 01-04
Hoje, quero apresentar uma explicação de James W. Zackrison (CPB, LES, jan-mar 2007, 2) sobre como entendermos o livro de Eclesiastes.
Esse teólogo explica que, ao contrário de outros livros da Bíblia, que frequentemente começam com uma forte afirmação sobre Deus, Eclesiastes começa com um grito sobre a falta de sentido para a vida. “Vaidade de vaidades, tudo é vaidade”. Essa introdução se parece mais com os modernos escritores seculares que com um profeta de Yahweh. Não obstante, como cristãos, cremos que Eclesiastes foi colocado no cânon das Escrituras porque Deus tem nele uma mensagem para nós.
Muitos estudiosos afirmam que o autor não foi o rei Salomão. Mas mantemos a posição de que Salomão foi o escritor fundamentados na tradição cristã e judaica e nas evidências internas do livro. Ao nos dedicarmos ao estudo deste livro, alguns simples princípios de interpretação nos serão de muita ajuda.
Para começar, Salomão estava escrevendo no fim de uma vida cheia de amargura e ira contra si mesmo por sua apostasia. O que é singular nesse livro é que, em alguns lugares, Salomão escreveu sob a perspectiva de alguém alienado de Deus. Como alguns autores modernos, ele nos dá pensamentos que saem diretamente de sua cabeça. Vemos o mundo como aparece através desses olhos.
Essas porções de Eclesiastes que mencionam a experiência e o raciocínio dos anos de apostasia [de Salomão] não devem ser considerados como se representassem a mente e a vontade do Espírito. Não obstante, são um registro inspirado do que ele realmente pensava e fazia naquele tempo, e esse registro constitui uma grave advertência contra o tipo errado de pensamento e ação. Passagens como essas não devem ser tiradas de seu contexto e usadas para ensinar alguma suposta verdade que a Inspiração nunca pretendeu que ensinassem.
Finalmente, é esta a mensagem desse livro: Deus nos mostra como a vida é cruel e vazia quando Ele não está presente. E esse é o livro que começaremos a ler hoje: Eclesiastes, capítulos 1-4, onde o autor inicia, melancolicamente, tecendo um texto reflexivo de que, para ele, nada tem sentido, chegando a dizer que nem os prazeres, nem a própria sabedoria têm sentido. O sabor dessa melancolia é tão grande que Salomão chega a comparar a sabedoria com a insensatez. Para ele, até mesmo o trabalho árduo é inútil. Ele não poupa o leitor de conhecer as injustiças e os absurdos da vida. “Bem vindos ao mundo real”, seria o slogan.
Mas como de qualquer caos é possível sacar um proveito, o capítulo três nos ensina a sabermos aproveitar bem o nosso tempo.
