The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after Nebuzar-Adan, chief of the executioners, hath sent him from Ramah, in his taking him -- and he a prisoner in chains -- in the midst of all the removal of Jerusalem and of Judah, who are removed to Babylon.

And the chief of the executioners taketh Jeremiah, and saith unto him, `Jehovah thy God hath spoken this evil concerning this place,

and Jehovah bringeth [it] in, and doth as He spake, because ye have sinned against Jehovah, and have not hearkened to His voice, even this thing hath been to you.

`And now, lo, I have loosed thee to-day from the chains that [are] on thy hand; if good in thine eyes to come with me [to] Babylon, come, and I keep mine eye upon thee: and if evil in thine eyes to come with me to Babylon, forbear; see, all the land [is] before thee, whither [it be] good, and whither [it be] right in thine eyes to go -- go.` --

and while he doth not reply -- `Or turn back unto Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath appointed over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him in the midst of the people, or whithersoever it is right in thine eyes to go -- go.` And the chief of the executioners giveth to him for the way, and a gift, and sendeth him away,

and Jeremiah cometh in unto Gedaliah son of Ahikam, to Mizpah, and dwelleth with him, in the midst of the people who are left in the land.

And all the heads of the forces that [are] in the field hear, they and their men, that the king of Babylon hath appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam over the land, and that he hath charged him [with] men, and women, and infants, and of the poor of the land, of those who have not been removed to Babylon;

and they come in unto Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan sons of Kareah, and Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maachathite, they and their men.

And swear to them doth Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, and to their men, saying, `Be not afraid of serving the Chaldeans, abide in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it is well for you;

and I, lo, I am dwelling in Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans who are come in unto us, and ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruit, and oil, and put in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.`

CRESCIMENTO E AMADURECIMENTO
Jeremias 17-19
Na faculdade, vi uma planta crescer de maneira muito rápida e surpreendente. Dentre os vários bebedouros d’água espalhados pelo campus do centro universitário, havia um que ficava bem junto à portaria. Ele era diferente dos demais por ter o jato d’água muito forte. Até hoje, ele é assim. Se você aperta o botãozinho e não põe a boca para beber a água, ele joga um jato d’água a uns três metros de distância. Naquela época, no pedacinho de gramado que havia ao redor daquele bebedouro, a equipe de paisagismo plantou ali três mudinhas de coqueiro. Não sei o nome do coqueiro, mas é aquele tipo de palmeira ornamental. E nós alunos gostávamos de brincar de apertar o botão do bebedouro jogando a água sem bebê-la, só para ver a água cair bem em cima de um desses coqueiros. E o tempo foi passando, começou a notar-se que aquela mudinha de coqueiro que ficou vítima do jato d’água do bebedouro, por ter sido plantada bem ali, começou a ficar diferente das outras! Sério! Ela parecia mais viçosa. Então brincávamos: “Vejam! Estou colaborando com a jardinagem, apertando esse bebedouro aqui...” No inverno, eu chegava a ficar com dó daquela plantinha, em ver tanta água tão fria a abater-se sobre ela, o tempo todo. Os anos se passaram. Muitas e muitas pessoas, ao tomar a água daquele bebedouro, terminam deixando-a espirrar naquele coqueiro, e o resultado é que quando eu volto lá hoje, vejo três grandes palmeiras, mas com um detalhe: uma delas é muito, muito, muito maior do que as outras. Seu tronco é muito mais forte, e de uma espessura muito superior. Ela pode oferecer uma sombra muito maior. Hoje, quando o jato d’água vem do bebedouro, não cai mais por cima da planta. Ele bate ao pé do grande e maior de todos os coqueiros.
Sabe o que isso significa?
Significa o que você vai ler na leitura de hoje, em Jeremias 17. O homem que se afasta do Senhor é como um arbusto no deserto, longe d’água. Ele seca e morre. Mas a pessoa cuja confiança está no Senhor é como uma árvore plantada junto às águas. A palmeira do bebedouro! Cresce, floresce, fica linda, deixa as pessoas felizes, sorri para a vida e tem muito a oferecer.
Que tipo de pessoa você quer ser?
A vida do coqueiro da nossa história não era um mar-de-rosas. Ele vivia molhado, com água gelada. Mas compensou. Se você quiser ser recompensado também, precisa deixar que o oleiro, de Jeremias 18-19, quebre-o, molhe-o, corte-o, amasse-o, remodele-o, asse-o e, enfim, apresente-o como obra-prima das mãos de um Deus perfeito.
