The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, after Nebuzar-Adan, chief of the executioners, hath sent him from Ramah, in his taking him -- and he a prisoner in chains -- in the midst of all the removal of Jerusalem and of Judah, who are removed to Babylon.

And the chief of the executioners taketh Jeremiah, and saith unto him, `Jehovah thy God hath spoken this evil concerning this place,

and Jehovah bringeth [it] in, and doth as He spake, because ye have sinned against Jehovah, and have not hearkened to His voice, even this thing hath been to you.

`And now, lo, I have loosed thee to-day from the chains that [are] on thy hand; if good in thine eyes to come with me [to] Babylon, come, and I keep mine eye upon thee: and if evil in thine eyes to come with me to Babylon, forbear; see, all the land [is] before thee, whither [it be] good, and whither [it be] right in thine eyes to go -- go.` --

and while he doth not reply -- `Or turn back unto Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath appointed over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him in the midst of the people, or whithersoever it is right in thine eyes to go -- go.` And the chief of the executioners giveth to him for the way, and a gift, and sendeth him away,

and Jeremiah cometh in unto Gedaliah son of Ahikam, to Mizpah, and dwelleth with him, in the midst of the people who are left in the land.

And all the heads of the forces that [are] in the field hear, they and their men, that the king of Babylon hath appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam over the land, and that he hath charged him [with] men, and women, and infants, and of the poor of the land, of those who have not been removed to Babylon;

and they come in unto Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan sons of Kareah, and Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maachathite, they and their men.

And swear to them doth Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, and to their men, saying, `Be not afraid of serving the Chaldeans, abide in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it is well for you;

and I, lo, I am dwelling in Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans who are come in unto us, and ye, gather ye wine, and summer fruit, and oil, and put in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.`

NEARER MY GOD TO THEE

Você tem lido a Bíblia diariamente? Você sabe o que o hábito da leitura diária da Bíblia pode fazer na sua vida? Depois que você termina de ler o Livro Sagrado, sente vontade de louvar a Deus?
Ao longo da história, por muito tempo, somente os homens escreviam hinos cristãos. Mas, aos poucos, as mulheres também passaram a poetizar. Atualmente, o universo gospel tem muitas boas músicas escritas por mulheres que se consagram a Deus e O serviram. Uma dessas canções mais conhecidas em todo o mundo vem de um poema escrito por Sarah Flower Adams (1805-1848).
Num belo dia, no ano de 1841, enquanto Sarah estava estudando sua Bíblia, ficou muito impressionada com a história da visão de Jacó, que está na leitura de hoje. Ela identificou-se com Jacó, que precisava muito de Deus quando esteve em Betel e sonhou com a escada que alcançava o Céu, cheia de anjos que subiam e desciam. Então, inspirada naquela passagem bíblica, Sarah resolveu escrever alguns versos e estrofes, que mais tarde se tornariam conhecidos no mundo inteiro.
A tradição aponta um lugar na Jordânia, chamado Bira, como sendo o possível local onde Jacó recebeu seu sonho revelador. E muitos cristãos que já visitaram esse memorial palestino, pararam ali e cantaram o hino que Lowell Manson compôs com os versos da senhora Adams. É impressionante e inspirador! Ela evocou uma das experiências espirituais mais significativas da vida de Jacó e a traduziu em palavras que têm sido um grande auxílio para a alegria de muitos cristãos.
O fruto dessa devoção também tem sido confortador para crentes em situações de sofrimento. Você lembra do terrível desastre que aconteceu com o transatlântico “Titanic”, quando mais de mil pessoas foram agonizadas à morte? Era a viagem inaugural daquele navio. Grandes personagens estavam a bordo. Nele, viajava também, um grupo de peregrinos, cristãos europeus, em busca de uma nova terra (USA). Enquanto aquela grande embarcação estava soçobrando, no momento em que eles estavam para entrar num estado de pânico geral, a orquestra de bordo começou a tocar a melodia que havia sido colocada na letra de Sarah Adams. Logo em seguida, o espetáculo foi comovedor. Vários tripulantes que, por crerem na Bíblia, eram tementes a Deus, à medida que o navio afundava, passaram a cantar “Nearer my God to Thee, nearer to thee...” de mãos dadas, até o fim da vida!
Esse é o belo fruto produzido na vida de quem se aprofunda no conhecimento da Palavra de Deus. É o desejo de sempre seguir cantando: “Mais perto quero estar, meu Deus de Ti.”
