The word that came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the body-guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him, being bound in chains, among all the captivity of Jerusalem and Judah, that were carried away captive to Babylon.

And the captain of the body-guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, Jehovah thy God pronounced this evil upon this place,

and Jehovah hath brought [it about] and done according as he said; for ye have sinned against Jehovah, and have not hearkened unto his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.

And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains that are upon thy hand. If it seem good in thy sight to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will keep mine eye upon thee; but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me to Babylon, forbear. See, all the land is before thee: whither it seemeth good and right in thy sight to go, thither go.

And while he had not yet given answer; [he said,] Yea, go back to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath appointed over the cities of Judah, and abide with him in the midst of the people; or go wheresoever it seemeth right in thy sight to go. And the captain of the body-guard gave him provisions and a present, and let him go.

And Jeremiah came unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and abode with him among the people that remained in the land.

And all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam over the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that had not been carried away captive to Babylon.

And they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah; even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.

And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.

And as for me, behold, I dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans, who will come unto us; and ye, gather wine, and summer fruits, and oil, and put [them] in your vessels, and dwell in your cities which ye have taken.

Jeremias 14-16
Na leitura bíblica de hoje, há muitas pérolas. Delas, destaco um versículo: “Mas Tu, ó Senhor, estás em nosso meio, e somos chamados pelo Teu nome” (Jeremias 14:9). Pare para pensar na profundidade dessa última frase. Você é chamado por que nome? O nome de alguém pode influenciar seu destino? Para refletir sobre isso, quero compartilhar com você, abaixo, uma história que acabo de ler.
Conta-se que o dia 30 de abril de 1789 foi um dia festivo em Nova Iorque. Os canhões troavam. Sinos tocavam. Trombetas soavam. Tambores rufavam. Fogos de artifício iluminavam o céu. As multidões se alegravam.
“Viva George Washington, presidente dos Estados Unidos!” - gritava o povo.
Todos queriam ver aquele que os havia ajudado a conquistar a liberdade.
No meio daquela multidão, estava Washington Irving, de cinco anos de idade, que havia recebido esse nome em homenagem ao comandante chefe do Exército Revolucionário. Quando Washington estava andando a cavalo por uma das ruas, numa parada militar, a ama do menino puxou-o pelo braço e lhe disse:
“Olhe, queridinho! Aí vai o general Washington, o homem em homenagem a quem você recebeu o nome!”
Contudo, aquela olhada rápida não foi o suficiente para satisfazer a ama do menino Irving. No dia seguinte à parada, ela estava andando com o garoto, quando viu o presidente entrar numa loja. Agarrando o menino pela mão, atravessou a rua e entrou na loja.
Pondo-se diante do presidente, disse com sotaque escocês:
“Com licença, excelência. Aqui está um menino que tem o seu nome!”.
“É mesmo?” – perguntou Washington – “que bom!”.
Enquanto olhava para baixo e sorria, disse ao menino:
“Estou contente por encontrá-lo, Washington”. Espero que você cresça e seja um bom menino. Que Deus o abençoe – e colocou uma das fortes mãos sobre a cabeça do garoto.
Daquele momento em diante, George Washington foi o herói de Washington Irving. Posteriormente, quando se tornou escritor, ele escreveu “A Vida de George Washington”. Escreveu também as biografias de Cristóvão Colombo, John Jacob Astor, Oliver Goldsmith e do capitão Bonneville. Por algum tempo serviu a seu país como diplomata na Inglaterra e Espanha. Toda a sua vida procurou honrar o nome que lhe fora dado.
Pelo fato de amar a Jesus, você é chamado cristão. Você está procurando fazer o melhor para honra do nome que lhe foi dado? Ao fazer a leitura de hoje, pense: “Como o profeta Jeremias descreveria a sua vida cristã?” Você ficaria satisfeito em ler tal descrição?
