And the king sent, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

And the king went up into the house of Jehovah, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of Jehovah.

And the king stood on the dais, and made a covenant before Jehovah, to walk after Jehovah, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all [his] heart, and with all [his] soul, to establish the words of this covenant that are written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

And the king commanded Hilkijah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, to bring forth out of the temple of Jehovah all the vessels that had been made for Baal, and for the Asherah, and for all the host of the heavens; and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them to Bethel.

And he abolished the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense on the high places in the cities of Judah, and the environs of Jerusalem; and them that burned incense to Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.

And he brought out the Asherah from the house of Jehovah, outside Jerusalem, to the torrent of Kidron, and burned it at the torrent of Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder upon the graves of the children of the people.

And he broke down the houses of the sodomites, which were in the house of Jehovah, where the women wove tents for the Asherah.

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba even to Beer-sheba; and he broke down the high places of the gates, those at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, [and] those on the left hand of any [going in] at the gate of the city.

Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of Jehovah in Jerusalem, but they ate of the unleavened bread among their brethren.

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the sons of Hinnom, that no man might cause his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.

CORTANDO O MAL PELA RAÍZ
2Crônicas 29-31
Vamos continuar com nossa leitura bíblica? Em contraste com o exemplo do rei Acaz, hoje encontramos um rei fiel. Bom, né?
Quando o rei Ezequias chegou ao trono, a devastação do reinado que seu pai havia deixado, podia ser vista em todos os lugares. Era algo muito triste: “Em poucas e bem escolhidas palavras, o rei passou em revista a situação que enfrentava: o templo fechado e a cessação de todas as cerimônias no seu recinto; a idolatria flagrante praticada nas ruas da cidade e através do reino; a apostasia de multidões que poderiam ter permanecido leais a Deus se os líderes de Judá lhes tivessem dado um exemplo reto; e o declínio do reino e sua perda de prestígio na estima das nações ao redor.” Profetas e Reis, pág. 332. O profeta Miquéias descreve, com muita propriedade, sobre a condição espiritual de Judá no momento em que Ezequias tornou-se rei (ver Miquéias capítulos 2 e 3). Até os sacerdotes e os profetas tinham problemas espirituais sérios.
Provavelmente, você já deve ter visto aquele ditado que diz: “Filho de peixe, peixinho é.” Mas no caso de Acaz e Ezequias, isso não pode ser aplicado. Acaz foi apóstata, Ezequias foi fiel.
Veja as palavras de Ezequias: “Nossos pais foram infiéis; fizeram o que o nosso Deus reprova e O abandonaram. Desviaram o rosto do local da habitação do Senhor e deram-lhe as costas. Também fecharam as portas do pórtico e apagaram as lâmpadas. Não queimaram incenso nem apresentaram holocausto no santuário para o Deus de Israel” (2Crônicas 29:6-7).
Penso que o maior problema do tempo do pai de Ezequias, no assunto de apostasia, foi o fato de que eles fecharam o próprio templo. O edifício que o próprio Deus tinha fundado, o lugar onde o Senhor Se manifestaria ao Seu povo, o lugar onde as pessoas deveriam louvar a Deus, reconhecer a Deus como Criador e Redentor, o lugar onde Ele reinava e onde estava centralizada Sua atividade de salvação; tudo isso tinha sido abertamente abandonado pelas próprias pessoas que diziam que eram povo de Deus. Que mau testemunho! Como eles se rebaixaram!
Foi nesse contexto que chegou Ezequias. Ele não só restaurou a adoração correta, mas não perdeu tempo em arrancar todas as práticas errôneas, porque aparentemente sabia que, não importava quantas boas coisas instituísse, não importava quantas formas e tradições adequadas fossem seguidas, a existência de práticas pecaminosas iria fatalmente envenenar tudo.
Maus hábitos são como uma batata podre numa caixa de batatas boas: é só uma questão de tempo, e o mal leva tudo para o brejo. Corte o mal pela raiz.
