And the king sent, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

And the king went up into the house of Jehovah, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of Jehovah.

And the king stood on the dais, and made a covenant before Jehovah, to walk after Jehovah, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all [his] heart, and with all [his] soul, to establish the words of this covenant that are written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

And the king commanded Hilkijah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, to bring forth out of the temple of Jehovah all the vessels that had been made for Baal, and for the Asherah, and for all the host of the heavens; and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them to Bethel.

And he abolished the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense on the high places in the cities of Judah, and the environs of Jerusalem; and them that burned incense to Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.

And he brought out the Asherah from the house of Jehovah, outside Jerusalem, to the torrent of Kidron, and burned it at the torrent of Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder upon the graves of the children of the people.

And he broke down the houses of the sodomites, which were in the house of Jehovah, where the women wove tents for the Asherah.

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba even to Beer-sheba; and he broke down the high places of the gates, those at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, [and] those on the left hand of any [going in] at the gate of the city.

Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of Jehovah in Jerusalem, but they ate of the unleavened bread among their brethren.

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the sons of Hinnom, that no man might cause his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.

O TEMPO É AGORA, LEIA!
2Crônicas 34-36
Nas nossas reflexões de ontem sobre o reino de Judá, paramos nos últimos dias do rei Ezequias. Como rei da nação da época, estava enfrentando a invasão dos assírios. Mas, graças a Deus, tanto ele quanto toda a sociedade de Jerusalém foram poupados, e os assírios voltaram derrotados.
Depois daquela vitória surpreendente, Ezequias virou herói. Porém, seu problema foi que, como muitos outros que vieram antes dele e que também foram bem-sucedidos, não se deu bem com a riqueza, o poder e o prestígio. Ele acabou se estragando por bobeira.
Corremos muito mais riscos nos tempos de prosperidade que nas crises, porque o maior dos prejuízos pode ser deixar o sucesso subir à cabeça. Esse foi o problema de Ezequias, que pôde ser visto de forma muito clara na visita dos embaixadores babilônicos. Infelizmente, essas fraquezas espirituais dele tiveram consequências devastadoras para a nação que ele governava. Após sua morte, seu filho Manassés subiu ao trono. Ele governou por 55 anos. Foi ímpio, mau, pecador, sofreu castigos, se arrependeu, voltou para o Senhor, morreu, deixou um filho chamado Amon governando, que só conseguiu governar por 2 anos e morreu assassinado. Então, o filho de Amon, neto de Manassés, bisneto de Ezequias, chamado Josias, se tornou o rei dos judeus com apenas 8 anos de idade.
Josias fez muitas reformas importantes. Numa delas, na reforma do templo, eles acharam um manuscrito do Pentateuco, a Bíblia da época que, inclusive, estava perdida. O livro Profetas e Reis, pág. 393, detalha melhor essa história. Diz assim: “O manuscrito por tanto tempo perdido foi achado no templo por Hilquias, o sumo sacerdote, quando o edifício estava sob intensivos reparos, em harmonia com o plano do rei Josias para a preservação da estrutura sagrada...
“Josias ficou profundamente impressionado ao ouvir pela primeira vez a leitura das exortações e advertências registradas neste antigo manuscrito. Nunca dantes compreendera ele tão profundamente a clareza com que Deus havia posto perante Israel ‘a vida e a morte, a bênção e a maldição’ (Deuteronômio 30:19); e quão repetidamente foram eles admoestados a escolher o caminho da vida, para que se tornassem um louvor na Terra, uma bênção a todas as nações. ‘Esforçai-vos, e animai-vos; não temais’, Israel tinha sido exortado por intermédio de Moisés, ‘nem vos espanteis diante deles; porque o Senhor teu Deus é o que vai contigo. Não te deixarei nem te desampararei’.” Deuteronômio 31:6.
E a grande lição é: se você tirar tempo para, na reforma da sua vida, se aprofundar no conhecimento da Palavra de Deus, terá sua vida transformada. Então, por que não fazer a leitura bíblica de hoje?
