And the king sent, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

And the king went up into the house of Jehovah, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of Jehovah.

And the king stood on the dais, and made a covenant before Jehovah, to walk after Jehovah, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all [his] heart, and with all [his] soul, to establish the words of this covenant that are written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

And the king commanded Hilkijah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, to bring forth out of the temple of Jehovah all the vessels that had been made for Baal, and for the Asherah, and for all the host of the heavens; and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them to Bethel.

And he abolished the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense on the high places in the cities of Judah, and the environs of Jerusalem; and them that burned incense to Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.

And he brought out the Asherah from the house of Jehovah, outside Jerusalem, to the torrent of Kidron, and burned it at the torrent of Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder upon the graves of the children of the people.

And he broke down the houses of the sodomites, which were in the house of Jehovah, where the women wove tents for the Asherah.

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba even to Beer-sheba; and he broke down the high places of the gates, those at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, [and] those on the left hand of any [going in] at the gate of the city.

Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of Jehovah in Jerusalem, but they ate of the unleavened bread among their brethren.

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the sons of Hinnom, that no man might cause his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.

Jeremias 01-03
Jeremias nasceu no povoado de Anatot, pertinho de Jerusalém, entre 650 e 640 a.C. Era filho do sacerdote Helcias, da casa de Eli. Talvez descendesse de Abiatar, chefe dos levitas em Jerusalém, na época do rei Davi, e que foi desterrado para Anatot por Salomão. O significado do nome Jeremias é incerto. Há mais de uma possibilidade sobre o significado. Pode ser “Iahweh exalta”, “Iahweh é sublime” ou “Iahweh abre” (=faz nascer). Esse nome era bastante comum nos tempos bíblicos. São conhecidos pelo menos sete personagens, mais ou menos importantes, com esse nome. A Bíblia não dá muita informação sobre a infância e sobre a formação de Jeremias. Sabemos pouquinho a respeito. Quase nada. Parece que ele jamais assumiu qualquer função sacerdotal. Pelo contrário, denunciou duramente o papel exercido pelos sacerdotes de seu tempo. O que, por outro lado, aponta para sua rigorosa visão levítica e possível formação de como deveria agir um sacerdote. Consta, nesta linha, que o rei Josias (640-609 a.C.) proibira o exercício do ofício aos sacerdotes não provenientes de Jerusalém. É possível que Jeremias tenha começado a profetizar em Anatot. Mas foi perseguido, quiseram matá-lo em sua própria terra. Não conhecemos o motivo desse complô armado contra Jeremias por seus conterrâneos e até por seus familiares. Talvez por ter apoiado a reforma do rei Josias, que destruiu os santuários regionais e centralizou as atividades cultuais em Jerusalém, ele tenha prejudicado os interesses de sua família sacerdotal. Ou, quem sabe, o duro teor de sua crítica social e religiosa tenha provocado tão violenta reação. Durante toda a sua vida, Jeremias irá incomodar muita gente, que tentará, a qualquer custo, calar a sua boca. Jeremias atuou cerca de 50 anos, de 627 a 580 a.C., sob os governos de Josias (629-609 a.C.), Joaquim (609-598 a.C.), Sedecias (597-586 a.C.) e Godolias/exílio (586 a 580 a.C.). Por isso, costumamos dividir, didaticamente, sua atuação segundo estes quatro períodos.
A situação em Judá se complicou rapidamente, quando um príncipe davídico chamado Ismael, que escapara para Amon, voltou e assassinou Godolias, provavelmente em outubro de 586 a.C. Os sobreviventes, entre eles Jeremias, fogem para o Egito, temendo uma represália babilônica. Lá no Egito, em Táfnis, cidade situada a leste do delta do Nilo, o incansável profeta, que já devia ter uns 70 anos de idade, passa a repreender a idolatria que seus conterrâneos ali praticavam. Depois disso, nada mais sabemos sobre Jeremias. Diz a lenda que o profeta de Anatot foi apedrejado e morto por seus conterrâneos, lá no Egito. Esta lenda está no apócrifo “Vida dos Profetas”: texto escrito por um judeu da Palestina no século I d.C.
