And the king sent, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

And the king went up into the house of Jehovah, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of Jehovah.

And the king stood on the dais, and made a covenant before Jehovah, to walk after Jehovah, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all [his] heart, and with all [his] soul, to establish the words of this covenant that are written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

And the king commanded Hilkijah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, to bring forth out of the temple of Jehovah all the vessels that had been made for Baal, and for the Asherah, and for all the host of the heavens; and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them to Bethel.

And he abolished the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense on the high places in the cities of Judah, and the environs of Jerusalem; and them that burned incense to Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.

And he brought out the Asherah from the house of Jehovah, outside Jerusalem, to the torrent of Kidron, and burned it at the torrent of Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder upon the graves of the children of the people.

And he broke down the houses of the sodomites, which were in the house of Jehovah, where the women wove tents for the Asherah.

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba even to Beer-sheba; and he broke down the high places of the gates, those at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, [and] those on the left hand of any [going in] at the gate of the city.

Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of Jehovah in Jerusalem, but they ate of the unleavened bread among their brethren.

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the sons of Hinnom, that no man might cause his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.

PENA DE MORTE
Levítico 20-22
Na leitura de hoje, encontramos uma aparente contradição bíblica, que pode ser expressa pela pergunta: “Se Deus disse ‘não matarás’, como ordenava a prática da pena capital?”
As diferentes sociedades têm diferentes formas de reprimir e banir o mal existente no seu seio. Apesar de o mandamento ser contra o assassinato, Deus permitira à comunidade israelita, especialmente às autoridades máximas, proferir uma sentença de morte para os que cometiam alguns tipos de crimes ou pecados. Paulo falou sobre a autoridade que Deus dava aos dirigentes públicos para administrarem tais execuções de juízo (Romanos 13:3-4). O mandamento “não matarás” era aplicado a todos os homens individualmente, enquanto as ordenanças de execução eram dadas coletivamente. A regularização da pena de morte não autoriza a arbitrariedade homicida de um indivíduo. Mesmo atualmente, nas sociedades modernas onde é regularizada a pena de morte, acontece assim. Não é uma pessoa que decide a morte da outra, para alimentar os seus sentimentos maus. É o sistema que determina a morte do criminoso, com dor no coração por precisar fazer o que se deve ser feito. Não é vingança, e sim, o trabalho de um sistema judicial. Em tal sistema, as pessoas da parte inocente e ofendida não têm o poder de decidir nada em relação ao condenado. Quem decide é a lei. E essa moldura de execução protege a própria pessoa de praticar os problemas que estão por trás do sexto mandamento.
Você e eu, como pessoas físicas, não temos como decidir sobre os modelos judiciários a serem adotados ou não na sociedade em que estamos inseridos. Mas como indivíduos, podemos entender que o sexto mandamento preocupa-se com a possibilidade de haver ódio em nosso coração, se nós desejarmos que a vida do próximo seja arruinada. Isso fica mais esclarecido no Novo Testamento, quando Jesus, sem dar um posicionamento específico sobre a pena capital, por não estar decidindo nada em nível de sociedade, dirigiu-se a indivíduos e disse que “todo aquele que sem motivo se irar contra seu irmão estará sujeito a julgamento.” Pois não devemos alimentar o ódio nem a vingança no nosso coração. “Ouvistes que foi dito: Olho por olho, dente por dente. Eu, porém, vos digo: não resistais ao perverso; mas, a qualquer que te ferir na face direita, volta-lhe também a outra” (Mateus 5:22, 38-39 - RA).
Um homicídio começa no coração daquele que odeia as pessoas. Deus valoriza a vida e desagrada-se de qualquer indício de raiva, vingança ou rejeição (1 João 3:15).
Portanto, independentemente dos moldes que os nossos tribunais de justiça adotem para banir o mal, como pessoas, podemos decidir pela paz e pelo bem.
