And the king sent, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

And the king went up into the house of Jehovah, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of Jehovah.

And the king stood on the dais, and made a covenant before Jehovah, to walk after Jehovah, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all [his] heart, and with all [his] soul, to establish the words of this covenant that are written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

And the king commanded Hilkijah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, to bring forth out of the temple of Jehovah all the vessels that had been made for Baal, and for the Asherah, and for all the host of the heavens; and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them to Bethel.

And he abolished the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense on the high places in the cities of Judah, and the environs of Jerusalem; and them that burned incense to Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.

And he brought out the Asherah from the house of Jehovah, outside Jerusalem, to the torrent of Kidron, and burned it at the torrent of Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder upon the graves of the children of the people.

And he broke down the houses of the sodomites, which were in the house of Jehovah, where the women wove tents for the Asherah.

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba even to Beer-sheba; and he broke down the high places of the gates, those at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, [and] those on the left hand of any [going in] at the gate of the city.

Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of Jehovah in Jerusalem, but they ate of the unleavened bread among their brethren.

AS DUAS TRANSFORMAÇÕES

A leitura de hoje me fez lembrar de uma das mais belas obras de arte guardadas na Itália. Estou falando do famoso quadro “Transfiguração”, de Rafael Sanzio, que, embora não intencionalmente, resumiu o espírito da Reforma.
A pintura mostra Cristo em pé sobre o monte, com os endemoninhados olhando esperançosamente para Ele desde o vale (Marcos 9:2-29). Os dois grupos de discípulos – um na montanha, o outro no vale – retratam dois tipos de cristãos. Os discípulos da montanha desejavam permanecer com Cristo, mais ou menos indiferentes às necessidades que ocorriam no vale. Ao longo dos séculos, muitos têm construído no alto da “montanha”, muito afastados das necessidades do mundo. Sua experiência é a das orações desacompanhadas de obras. Por outro lado, os discípulos do vale trabalhavam sem oração – e seus esforços em desalojar os demônios provaram-se um fracasso. Multidões têm sido vencidas tanto pela tentação de trabalhar em favor dos outros sem o poder da oração, quanto pela tentação de muito orar sem trabalhar pelos outros. Ambos os tipos de cristãos necessitam que a imagem de Deus seja neles restaurada.
Deus espera converter seres caídos em imagens Suas, através da transformação de sua vontade, mente, desejos e caracteres. O Espírito Santo traz aos crentes uma decisiva mudança de aparência. Seus frutos: “amor, alegria, paz, longanimidade, benignidade, bondade, fidelidade, mansidão, domínio próprio” (Gálatas 5:22-23) constituem agora o estilo de vida destes cristãos – mesmo tendo em vista que eles continuarão sendo mortais corruptíveis até o retorno de Cristo. Se não Lhe resistirmos, Cristo poderá efetuar em nós a obra da transformação santificadora.
A transfiguração de Cristo revela outro marcante contraste. Cristo foi transfigurado mas, em certo sentido, também o foi o garoto no vale. O menino foi transfigurado numa imagem demoníaca (Marcos 9:1-29). Aqui podemos ver claramente dois planos opostos – o plano divino de restaurar-nos e o plano satânico de arruinar-nos. As Escrituras dizem que Deus é capaz de nos guardar “de tropeços” (Judas 24). Satanás, por sua vez, faz tudo o que a seu alcance está para manter-nos no estado decaído.
A vida envolve constantes mudanças. Não existe terreno neutro. Ou estaremos sendo enobrecidos, ou degradados. Ou seremos “escravos do pecado”, ou “da justiça” (Romanos 6:17-18). Quem quer que ocupe nossa mente, estará ocupando todo o nosso ser. Se, através do Espírito Santo, Cristo ocupar nossa mente, tornar-nos-emos pessoas semelhantes a Cristo – pois uma vida cheia do Espírito apresenta “cativo todo pensamento à obediência de Cristo” (2Coríntios 10:5). Mas se estivermos sem Cristo, vamos terminar nos separando da fonte de vida, e então, nossa destruição última será inevitável.
Que sua transformação seja santificadora!
