And the king sent, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

And the king went up into the house of Jehovah, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of Jehovah.

And the king stood on the dais, and made a covenant before Jehovah, to walk after Jehovah, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all [his] heart, and with all [his] soul, to establish the words of this covenant that are written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

And the king commanded Hilkijah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, to bring forth out of the temple of Jehovah all the vessels that had been made for Baal, and for the Asherah, and for all the host of the heavens; and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them to Bethel.

And he abolished the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense on the high places in the cities of Judah, and the environs of Jerusalem; and them that burned incense to Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.

And he brought out the Asherah from the house of Jehovah, outside Jerusalem, to the torrent of Kidron, and burned it at the torrent of Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder upon the graves of the children of the people.

And he broke down the houses of the sodomites, which were in the house of Jehovah, where the women wove tents for the Asherah.

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba even to Beer-sheba; and he broke down the high places of the gates, those at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, [and] those on the left hand of any [going in] at the gate of the city.

Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of Jehovah in Jerusalem, but they ate of the unleavened bread among their brethren.

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the sons of Hinnom, that no man might cause his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.

O APROVEITAMENTO DA CHANCE
Isaías 20-23
Você consegue entender o capítulo 22, de Isaías? Há pessoas com dificuldades em entendê-lo, por isso, vou me deter nele. Esse capítulo tem duas partes. A primeira é uma profecia contra Jerusalém, que vai até o verso 14; a segunda, no restante do capítulo, é uma profecia contra Sebna.
Para conseguirmos entender a profecia da primeira parte, precisamos ter em mente que ela reflete tanto a condição moral quanto a condição espiritual de Jerusalém nos dias escuros do ano 701 a.C., quando Senaqueribe marchou vitoriosamente até as portas da cidade. O curioso é que vinham fugitivos de todos os lugares para se esconder nas cidades de todo o território de Judá. Quando já chegavam nas cidades, eles já iam dando a notícia de que o exercito de Senaqueribe estava se aproximando e já iam dominando tudo.
Quarenta e seis cidades-fortes de Judá foram conquistadas, uma a uma. A última esperança dos habitantes do território de Judá se foi quando ficaram sabendo que Senaqueribe já tinha derrotado até o Egito, que era uma potência, em Elteque. Então, aos olhos humanos, não tinha mais esperança. E você sabe que quanto mais uma pessoa está chafurdada na lama do erro, infelizmente, mais fácil ainda é ir para o fundo do poço.
Foi o que aconteceu com aqueles judeus. Como eles já tinham uma religião que era só da boca pra fora, só no formalismo, nessa hora sombria, uma religião de formas e cerimônias entrou em colapso. Em consequência, o povo se esqueceu de Deus de vez. Como imaginavam que no dia seguinte seriam eliminados pela guerra, chegaram à seguinte conclusão: “Vamos aproveitar o último dia para extravasar no pecado.” O que Isaías 22:12-13 mostra é que eles se entregaram à orgia, porque a expectativa era a de um desastre iminente e completo.
Eles até fizeram alguns preparativos apressados para enfrentar o cerco que o rei Senaqueribe ira fazer à cidade: demoliram algumas casas para usar o entulho para reforçar o muro da cidade, trouxeram água da fonte de Guião através de um túnel, etc. Mas a preparação mais importante foi negligenciada: uma renovada dedicação a Deus. Um chamado ao arrependimento foi rejeitado, e o povo se entregou ao ateísmo do medo e desespero.
Deus estava pronto para salvar, mas nada havia digno de ser salvo. Penso que, para Isaías, deve ter sido um desapontamento muito grande ver sua cidade amada tão próxima ao desastre, devido à indisposição de voltar-se para Deus.
Mas você e eu ainda temos a nossa chance de nos entregarmos a Jesus. Não deixe essa oportunidade passar. Aproveite para ir a Deus apenas por amor.
