And the king sent, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

And the king went up into the house of Jehovah, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of Jehovah.

And the king stood on the dais, and made a covenant before Jehovah, to walk after Jehovah, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all [his] heart, and with all [his] soul, to establish the words of this covenant that are written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

And the king commanded Hilkijah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, to bring forth out of the temple of Jehovah all the vessels that had been made for Baal, and for the Asherah, and for all the host of the heavens; and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them to Bethel.

And he abolished the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense on the high places in the cities of Judah, and the environs of Jerusalem; and them that burned incense to Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.

And he brought out the Asherah from the house of Jehovah, outside Jerusalem, to the torrent of Kidron, and burned it at the torrent of Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder upon the graves of the children of the people.

And he broke down the houses of the sodomites, which were in the house of Jehovah, where the women wove tents for the Asherah.

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba even to Beer-sheba; and he broke down the high places of the gates, those at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, [and] those on the left hand of any [going in] at the gate of the city.

Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of Jehovah in Jerusalem, but they ate of the unleavened bread among their brethren.

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the sons of Hinnom, that no man might cause his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.

VOCÊ QUER QUE DEUS LHE FORTALEÇA?

Olá, você que me acompanha nos comentários do “Por Dentro da Bíblia”! Como estão as coisas? Sua leitura bíblica está em dia ou atrasada? Se estiver atrasada e você tiver parado de ler, quero convidar-lhe a passar uma borracha no passado e recomeçar a partir da leitura de hoje. Daqui para frente, procure se manter atualizado. Que tal?
Aconteceu algo parecido no reino de Judá. O povo de Jerusalém tinha tido um rei que reinou por um período de 20 anos. Agora, o rei havia morrido. Então, eles precisavam começar de novo, com um novo rei chamado Ezequias. Ele era um homem bom, mas não porque tivesse algo bom em si. Você sabe o que significa a palavra Ezequias? De acordo com o Dicionário Bíblico Ilustrado de Vila Santamaria, da Editorial CLIE, essa palavra significa que Jeová fortalece, ou seja, que Deus dá força. Entendeu o porquê dele ser bom?
A partir daí, acontecem duas coisas. Podemos ver isso de forma bem clara na vida de Ezequias, quando lemos sobre ele e, também, podemos ver a possibilidade de que isso aconteça na nossa vida. Você quer que Deus lhe fortaleça?
Vejamos como Deus fortaleceu Ezequias. Ele era filho de Acaz, o rei anterior. Portanto, antes mesmo de tornar-se rei, Ezequias já estava associado ao governo desde 728 a.C. Quando começou seu reinado efetivo, como era um servo devoto de Deus, já iniciou reparando e limpando o Templo, reorganizando os serviços religiosos com os seus funcionários e celebrando uma grande Páscoa. Ele destruiu as plataformas de idolatria e acabou com as imagens que estavam sendo idolatradas.
Quando já estava em seu quarto ano do reinado, por volta de 720 a.C., seu vizinho do norte, o reino de Israel, foi invadido por alguns inimigos que acabaram com o reino. Ezequias conseguiu segurar a barra ainda por uns seis anos, no reino do sul, até que no ano 714 a.C., começaram as invasões assírias. Mas ali não foi o fim, porque quem acabou mal foi a própria Assíria.
E logo depois que Ezequias ficou doente e quase morreu, escapou por pouco, ganhando mais 15 anos de lambuja para viver, como resposta de Deus a um pedido que ele fez em oração. Por fim, em 691 a.C., o rei morreu e, no lugar dele, ficou seu filho Manassés.
Você percebe que buscar a Deus foi uma atitude que fez parte tanto dos primeiros quanto dos últimos atos de Ezequias? Isso pode nos ensinar sobre como Deus fortalece um ser humano.
