Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

He went up to the temple of the LORD with the men of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets — all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the LORD.

The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the LORD — to follow the LORD and keep his commands, regulations and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.

The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the LORD all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley and took the ashes to Bethel.

He did away with the pagan priests appointed by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the towns of Judah and on those around Jerusalem — those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations and to all the starry hosts.

He took the Asherah pole from the temple of the LORD to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem and burned it there. He ground it to powder and scattered the dust over the graves of the common people.

He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine-prostitutes, which were in the temple of the LORD and where women did weaving for Asherah.

Josiah brought all the priests from the towns of Judah and desecrated the high places, from Geba to Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. He broke down the shrines [Or high places] at the gates — at the entrance to the Gate of Joshua, the city governor, which is on the left of the city gate.

Although the priests of the high places did not serve at the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, they ate unleavened bread with their fellow priests.

He desecrated Topheth, which was in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, so no-one could use it to sacrifice his son or daughter in [Or to make his son or daughter pass through] the fire to Molech.

O GRANDE DESAPONTAMENTO
Lucas 06-08
Foi um grande evento. Já ouviu falar? O Dia do Grande Desapontamento foi 22 de outubro de 1844, quando religiosos norte americanos inspirados em profecias bíblicas esperaram o retorno de Jesus Cristo. O movimento foi liderado por Guilherme Müller. Alguns dos remanescentes deste evento mais tarde fundaram algumas denominações cristãs. Dentre eles, emergiram os que fundaram a Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia, duas décadas depois.
A história aconteceu assim. Entre 1831 e 1844, Guilherme Miller - um fazendeiro e pregador Batista, ex-capitão de exército da guerra de 1812 - após anos de profícuo estudo, lançou a idéia do que veio a ser chamado de um “grande despertar do segundo advento”, que eventualmente se espalhou através do mundo cristão. Interpretando as profecias de Daniel 8:14, sobre as 2.300 tardes e manhãs, Müller calculou que Jesus Cristo retornaria a Terra em entre a primavera de 1843-1844. O ano passou, nada aconteceu. Ele e muitos de seus colaboradores, pastores de várias denominações, voltaram novamente ao estudo da Bíblia para descobrir o erro. Dentre eles, Samuel Snow chegou à conclusão da vinda de Jesus para 22 de outubro de 1844. Quando foi constatado que Jesus não apareceu, os seguidores de Miller experimentaram o que veio a se chamar de “O Grande Desapontamento”.
Dependentes dos estudos alheios, sem ter uma base bíblica pessoal sólida, a maioria dos milhares que haviam se juntado ao movimento, saiu em profunda desilusão. Entretanto, uns poucos se voltaram à Bíblia para descobrir porque tinham sido desapontados. E descobriram! A data de 22 de outubro estava correta. O detalhe era apenas que Miller tinha predito o evento errado para aquele dia. A profecia bíblica previa não o retorno de Jesus à Terra em 1844, mas que Ele começaria, naquela data, o juízo investigativo no santuário celestial.
Mas o grande desapontamento foi: não encontrar-se com Cristo. Isso foi em 22 de Outubro de 1844. Mas e no 22 de outubro de hoje? Como pode acontecer o nosso evento? Um desapontamento ou um encontro com Cristo? Lembre-se: os que desapontam são os biblicamente superficiais. A diferença hoje, é que estes não desapontam-se, mas deixam o Cristo desapontado. Entretanto, se a busca bíblica pessoal for diligente, não há desapontamento, mas sim encontro. Quem aprofunda-se no estudo da Bíblia encontra Jesus, o grande profeta, Suas profecias e a esperança que trazem.
Em Lucas 06-08 você pode ver a Jesus no encontro sabático da igreja, na eleição dos Seus seguidores, no ensino aos que Ele ama e no testemunho de quem O encontrou primeiro. O grande dia vem, em que os que desapontaram serão desapontados, e os que O encontraram O verão.
