King Xerxes replied to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Because Haman attacked the Jews, I have given his estate to Esther, and they have hanged him on the gallows.

Now write another decree in the king’s name on behalf of the Jews as seems best to you, and seal it with the king’s signet ring — for no document written in the king’s name and sealed with his ring can be revoked.”

At once the royal secretaries were summoned — on the twenty-third day of the third month, the month of Sivan. They wrote out all Mordecai’s orders to the Jews, and to the satraps, governors and nobles of the 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush. [That is, the upper Nile region] These orders were written in the script of each province and the language of each people and also to the Jews in their own script and language.

Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes, sealed the dispatches with the king’s signet ring, and sent them by mounted couriers, who rode fast horses especially bred for the king.

The king’s edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves; to destroy, kill and annihilate any armed force of any nationality or province that might attack them and their women and children; and to plunder the property of their enemies.

The day appointed for the Jews to do this in all the provinces of King Xerxes was the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar.

A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued as law in every province and made known to the people of every nationality so that the Jews would be ready on that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.

The couriers, riding the royal horses, raced out, spurred on by the king’s command. And the edict was also issued in the citadel of Susa.

Mordecai left the king’s presence wearing royal garments of blue and white, a large crown of gold and a purple robe of fine linen. And the city of Susa held a joyous celebration.

A leitura de hoje trata do mesmo assunto do início ao fim: as ofertas. Naquele tempo, o tipo de ofertas era bem diferente, mas é importante entendermos os princípios que estão por trás do ato de ofertar atualmente.
A palavra oferta é traduzida como o ato de trazer alguma coisa como oferenda ao Senhor. Nos tempos bíblicos existiam dois tipos de ofertas:
1º) Ofertas prescritas por lei – eram aquelas que os judeus traziam regularmente para o Senhor, tais como a oferta do holocausto, de manjares, oferta pacífica, pelo pecado e pela culpa. É claro que a prática delas não está ordenada para nós, cristãos, no sentido da apresentação literal delas. Mas o significado espiritual ainda é válido, porque quando ofertamos ao Senhor, fazemos isso na convicção de que todas essas bênçãos, que são a paz, comunhão com Deus, ausência de sentimento de culpa, purificação e vida abundante, são realidades presentes em nossas vidas. E é aí que se encaixa o outro tipo de ofertas.
2º) Ofertas voluntárias – eram apresentadas como uma expressão de gratidão a Deus. O povo era convidado a ofertar voluntariamente. Quando se empenharam na construção do tabernáculo no Monte Sinai, trouxeram liberalmente as ofertas com todos os materiais necessários para aquela obra. O povo contribuiu com tanta abundância, que Moisés chegou a pedir que parassem de trazê-las. Em uma reforma espiritual e religiosa promovida pelo sumo sacerdote Joiada, o povo ofertou para custear os reparos que precisavam ser feitos no templo. Todos contribuíram generosamente, semelhante ao que aconteceu no reinado de Ezequias.
No Novo Testamento, também há várias referências às ofertas. Muitas delas estão relacionadas ao próprio ministério de Jesus. Lembra da história da viúva pobre que ofertou tudo que tinha? Ela foi louvada pelo Senhor por causa disso. Teve também a mulher do vaso de alabastro, que derramou o unguento caríssimo nos pés de Cristo. Ela foi criticada por algumas pessoas, mas Jesus valorizou o ato de fé que ela demonstrou.
Mas, com certeza, o maior exemplo de ofertas voluntárias que temos no Novo Testamento está nos atos da Igreja Primitiva. Vemos que os crentes chegaram a vender as propriedades para depositar o dinheiro ao apostolado. Eles ofertavam de um jeito que não mediam esforços. As igrejas da Macedônia, por exemplo, contribuíam com alegria, até quando eles estavam passando pelas necessidades da pobreza, dando acima do que podiam para poder aumentar a oferta de socorro aos cristãos da Judéia.
Esses exemplos bíblicos são para nós. Devemos ter a mesma atitude e voluntariedade para com a manutenção da Obra de Deus. O ato de ofertar é uma prática que ainda deve continuar em vigor.
